Routes to British Citizenship

There are several ways to become a British citizen, depending on your background and circumstances. We assist with all major pathways, including:

Naturalisation (for Adults)
The most common route for adults who:

• Have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or settled status
• Have lived legally in the UK for at least 5 years
• Meet the residency, good character, and language requirements

Spouses of British citizens may apply after 3 years if they hold ILR.

Registration (for Children and Certain Adults)
You may be eligible if:

• You were born in the UK to a parent who has since become settled
• You have a form of British nationality (e.g. British Overseas Citizen)
• You have strong ties to the UK

British Citizenship by Adoption
Children adopted in the UK by British citizens may automatically acquire citizenship if the adoption is finalised before age 18.

Born Abroad to British Parents
You’ll typically need to apply for registration using Form MN1 before the child turns 18.

British Citizenship by Naturalisation – Eligibility Checklist
You may qualify to naturalise as a British citizen if:

• You are aged 18 or over
• You’ve lived in the UK lawfully for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a British citizen)
• You’ve held ILR or settled status for at least 12 months (unless you’re the spouse of a British citizen)
• You have not spent more than 450 days outside the UK in the last 5 years (or 270 days in the last 3 years for spouses)
• You were not outside the UK for more than 90 days in the last 12 months
• You pass the Life in the UK Test
• You meet the B1 English language requirement
• You are of good character (no serious criminal history, tax evasion, or immigration breaches)
